Voluntary Workcamps Association of Nigeria (VWAN) is a pioneer non-governmental, non-profit organisation established in 1963. VWAN promotes peace, community development, intercultural understanding, and active citizenship through voluntary service workcamps and international exchange programs.
What is Service Civil International (SCI) and VWAN's relationship with it?
Service Civil International (SCI) is a global peace organization with over 100 years of history. VWAN is an official full branch of SCI in Africa. Through this international affiliation, VWAN members can participate in international workcamps across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa.
How long has VWAN been operating in Nigeria?
VWAN was founded in 1963 and has over 60 years of active community development service in Nigeria, impacting over 85,000 beneficiaries across various states.
Who can become a volunteer with VWAN?
Anyone aged 18 and above with a passion for community service, teamwork, and cultural exchange can join VWAN. We welcome students, professionals, youth leaders, and seniors regardless of background.
What types of projects and workcamps does VWAN organize?
VWAN organizes local and international workcamps focusing on educational development, health & hygiene awareness, environmental protection, tree planting, renovation of community schools/clinics, and youth empowerment workshops.
Do I need special skills or qualifications to volunteer?
No special qualifications are required for general workcamps! Energy, open-mindedness, and commitment to teamwork are all you need. Specialized projects (such as medical outreaches or technical builds) may benefit from specific skills.
Are accommodation and food provided during workcamps?
Yes. During official short-term workcamps, basic communal accommodation and shared meals are provided for volunteers as part of the camp experience.
Where do donations and project funds go?
100% of public donations go directly into funding ongoing community projects, providing educational supplies for less-privileged children, building water and sanitation facilities, and supporting emergency outreach.
Does VWAN partner with other NGOs or corporate bodies?
Yes! VWAN actively collaborates with international NGOs, government agencies, corporate sponsors, educational institutions, and community leaders for impactful sustainable development projects.
How can I become an official member of VWAN?
You can complete our Membership Form online via the VWAN website, attend our monthly secretariat meetings at 78 Shyllon Street, Palmgrove, Lagos, and participate in local camp orientations.
How can international volunteers get visa support or invitation letters?
Once accepted into an official VWAN international workcamp, our secretariat provides official placement confirmation and visa support letters to assist with consular applications.
